If ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant has trouble with LinkDrop, the fix is almost always to remove LinkDrop from the assistant and add it again. It takes a minute, and your documents, share links and analytics stay exactly as they are.
Signs you need to reconnect
- The assistant says the upload or file transfer was blocked by a connection error, or that it can't send the file to LinkDrop.
- It says it can't replace a document, or offers to create a new one when you asked it to replace one.
- It says LinkDrop has no tool for something this help describes, such as an upload link, a PDF attached in ChatGPT, contacts or version history.
- It asks you to upload the file to LinkDrop yourself even though you attached it in the chat.
- It says it is unauthorized or no longer connected.
Why reconnecting fixes it
ChatGPT and Claude remember what LinkDrop can do from the moment you connected it. When we add a feature or a better way to send files, a connection made before that keeps the old list until you connect again. Reconnecting gives your assistant the current list.
For example, an assistant connected before upload links existed has no way to hand you one, so a file it cannot send from its own workspace gets stuck. After reconnecting, it can pass the file directly or give you an upload link to open.
Reconnect ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Apps (called Plugins in some versions).
- Open LinkDrop and disconnect or delete it.
- Add it again: choose Add custom MCP server. Name:
LinkDrop. Server URL:https://mcp.lnkdrp.com/mcp. Authentication: OAuth. Tick the box about custom servers and click Create. - LinkDrop opens. Sign in, pick the same workspace as before and click Allow.
- Start a new chat and ask again. If the file was attached in the old chat, attach it again in the new one.
Reconnect Claude (claude.ai and the Claude app)
- In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors.
- Find LinkDrop, then disconnect or remove it.
- Add it again: Add custom connector. Name:
LinkDrop. URL:https://mcp.lnkdrp.com/mcp. Click Add, then Connect. - In LinkDrop, sign in, pick the same workspace as before and click Allow.
- Start a new conversation and ask again.
A connector you reconnect on claude.ai is also updated in the Claude desktop and mobile apps.
Reconnect Claude Code and other clients
- Claude Code: run
claude mcp remove LinkDrop, thenclaude mcp add --transport http --scope user LinkDrop https://mcp.lnkdrp.com/mcp, and sign in when asked. - Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor and others: remove the LinkDrop server, add it again and sign in. The Agents page in LinkDrop shows the exact steps for your client. See Connect your agent.
What stays the same
Reconnecting changes only the assistant's connection. Your documents, share links, passwords, analytics and contacts are untouched, and links you already sent keep working.
The old connection may still be listed on the Agents page under Connected agents. A workspace owner or admin can click Revoke next to it so only the new one remains; the new connection works either way.
If it still doesn't work
- Make sure you picked the workspace that holds the document. A connection works in one workspace only; see Connect your agent.
- If the assistant can't send the file, ask it for an upload link. You open the link, choose the PDF, and it is filed the way the assistant set it up. See Getting a file to your agent.
- You can always replace a document yourself: open it in LinkDrop and use Replace file. Every link keeps its address, settings and analytics. See Versions and history.
- Still stuck? Contact support and tell us which assistant you use, the time it happened and what it said.
